Can I still drive to work after a DWI charge?

Start with a DWI assessment and learn whether you qualify for a limited driving privilege.

01 · Assessment

Schedule your DWI assessment

An assessment is an early step toward applying for a limited driving privilege. Contact an authorized North Carolina DWI provider and ask about appointment availability and the assessment documentation you will need.

Ask about a limited driving privilege

For an eligible driver with a 30-day civil revocation, the waiting period is at least 10 days. A 45-day civil revocation has a different waiting period. An assessment and agreement to participate in recommended education or treatment are among the requirements.

A judge must approve the privilege. Driving is restricted by the court order; other revocations can prevent eligibility. Completing an assessment does not authorize you to drive.

Which paperwork do I need?

Requesting restricted driving before trial

The limited driving privilege petition asks the court for permission to drive during the civil revocation. Your assessment provider can supply assessment documentation. An attorney or the clerk’s office can explain the appropriate forms and filing process.

Completing requirements after a conviction

The e-508 Certificate of Completion documents completion of the required assessment and education or treatment. Your DWI services provider handles this certificate. It is different from the petition for an initial limited driving privilege.

Restricted driving and getting your full license returned are different steps. For an initial civil revocation, license return generally requires the applicable period to end and payment of the required court costs, provided you are otherwise eligible. Confirm your status before driving.
